In war, survival is everything but the heart has a war of its own.
From Londonderry to colonial Hong Kong, a young mother's world shatters when Hong Kong falls to the Japanese Imperial Army. Forced to flee with her children, she escapes under cover of night, navigating fear, hunger, and the constant threat of capture.
Across seas and continents—from the Philippines to Australia—she carries nothing but her children and a fragile hope of safety. Along the way, an unexpected encounter with a powerful Chinese Sea Lord leaves a mark that will echo through generations.
Inspired by true events, The Story of Our Lives is a moving tale of courage, sacrifice, and the invisible red thread that binds families together—and of the inner dragon we all possess, rising when life demands our greatest strength.
About the author
Irene Turnbull-Banham spent many years between Northern Ireland and the Far East, and her career with a global bank took her across the Pacific Rim. Her own family's past—her mother-in-law's escape from Hong Kong with her children, and her father-in-law's endurance in a Japanese POW camp—inspired this novel. Irene now lives in North Wales and continues to write stories that honour ordinary people in extraordinary times.
